Wonderful Wednesday — The Apostle | May 13

Wonderful Wednesdays Continue — May 13 5:00–6:30 p.m. | Parish Hall

Join us on Wednesday, May 13, for our monthly Wonderful Wednesday — an evening of potluck dinner, fellowship, and a guided film discussion led by Fr. Joseph.

This month's film: The Apostle (1997)

Robert Duvall writes, directs, and stars in what many consider the finest performance of his career. He plays Sonny Dewey, a Pentecostal preacher from Texas — a man of extraordinary faith, genuine spiritual gifts, and profound personal failings. When his marriage collapses and his life falls apart, Sonny flees to the Louisiana bayou, gives himself a new name, and does the one thing he knows how to do: he starts a church.

What unfolds is one of the most honest and generous films ever made about Christian faith in America. The Apostle does not mock belief, and it does not sentimentalize it. It simply watches a complicated man try to be faithful — and asks the questions that matter most: Can a deeply flawed person be genuinely called by God? Can real faith coexist with real sin? And what does grace actually look like when it arrives in the middle of a ruined life?

Warm, often joyful, full of gospel music and the life of a worshipping community, The Apostle is ultimately a film about redemption — which makes it a natural fit for the season of Easter.
