Step Into the Shadows Before Easter Dawn

This Holy Week, St. Bart’s invites you into something new and deeply moving.

For the first time, we will gather on the Wednesday of Holy Week for Tenebrae — an ancient candlelight service whose name means “shadows.”

Tenebrae is a powerful journey through scripture, reflection, silence, and music as we walk prayerfully through the final hours of Jesus’ life.

What Makes This Service Special

This year’s Tenebrae will feature:

🕯 Ten brief reflections and congregational responses
🎻 Live sacred music from Haydn's Quartets performed by a professional string quartet
🌒 Gradual extinguishing of candles as the church grows darker
🤍 Space for silence, prayer, and deep reflection

Between each reflection, the string quartet will offer short musical meditations drawn from the string quartets of Joseph Haydn, one of the great masters of the musical tradition. These brief excerpts - reflective, luminous, and deeply expressive — will create space to breathe, listen, and absorb the story in a way words alone cannot.

The experience is reverent, beautiful, and contemplative.

If you have never attended Tenebrae before, you do not need to worry about knowing what to do. The service is simple and guided.

You can expect:

  • A printed program

  • Clear invitations to stand or sit

  • A peaceful, candlelit atmosphere

  • Approximately 60–70 minutes in length

  • Childcare available for young children

This is a meaningful service for longtime churchgoers and for those who may not regularly attend but are drawn to sacred music, quiet, and reflection.

Who Is This For?

Tenebrae is especially meaningful for:

  • Those seeking a deeper Holy Week experience

  • Anyone who appreciates classical and sacred music

  • Those carrying grief or longing

  • People exploring faith

  • Friends who may not usually attend church

All are welcome. No exceptions.

Make It Part of Your Holy Week.

Holy Week moves us from triumph to trial, from light toward darkness — before the joy of Easter morning.

Tenebrae gives us space to pause in that sacred middle.

If you attend only one additional Holy Week service this year, consider making it this one.
