The Night Everything Changed
On the night before his crucifixion, Jesus did something that stunned his disciples. He got up from the table, wrapped a towel around his waist, filled a basin with water, and knelt down to wash their feet — one by one. It was the work of the lowest servant in the household. And he did it deliberately, looking up at them and asking: "Do you know what I have done to you?"
Maundy Thursday is the night we remember that moment — and at St. Bartholomew's, we do not just remember it. We reenact it.
What Happens at the Maundy Thursday Service
The Maundy Thursday service at St. Bart's includes Holy Eucharist, the washing of feet, and concludes with the stripping of the altar — the linens, candles, and ornaments removed one by one until the church stands completely bare. The service ends in silence, with no spoken dismissal. The congregation simply leaves quietly into the night.
It is one of the most powerful liturgical experiences of the entire year.
What to Expect
✝️ Holy Eucharist - The washing of feet — participation is entirely voluntary 🤍 The stripping of the altar 🔇 The service ends in silence — no spoken dismissal ⏱ Approximately 60 minutes 👶 Childcare available for young children
A Note About Foot Washing
Participation in the foot washing is completely voluntary. You are welcome to come forward and have your feet washed, to wash someone else's feet, both, or simply to observe. There is no pressure and no wrong choice. If you do wish to participate, wearing shoes or sandals that are easy to remove will help.
This Service Follows the Agape Meal
At 5:30 pm in the Parish Hall, we gather for the Agape Meal — a sacred communal supper in the tradition of the early church. You are warmly encouraged to come to both, though each stands on its own.
Who Is This For?
The Maundy Thursday service is meaningful for anyone willing to sit with the weight of this night — the last supper, the garden, the arrest, the darkness closing in. It is not a comfortable service. It is not meant to be. But it is a profoundly honest one.
All are welcome. No prior church experience required.
