Staying With the Story

Good Friday is the most solemn day of the Christian year. It is the day when we do not look away.

On Good Friday, the altar has been stripped bare since Thursday night. There are no flowers, no festive music, no ringing bells. What remains is scripture, silence, and the willingness to sit with what this day actually means.

The Good Friday service at St. Bartholomew's is spare, unhurried, and honest. We gather to mark the crucifixion of Jesus Christ β€” not to rush past it toward Easter, but to stay with it long enough for it to mean something.

What to Expect

πŸ“– Scripture readings from the Passion narrative 🀍 Prayers and silence ✝️ Veneration of the cross β€” entirely optional πŸ”‡ A quiet, contemplative atmosphere ⏱ Approximately 45–60 minutes πŸ‘Ά Childcare available for young children

You Do Not Need to Have It All Together

Good Friday is not a service where you need to perform faith or arrive with the right feelings. Many people come carrying grief, doubt, or exhaustion β€” and find that this service meets them exactly there. You do not need to know the liturgy. You do not need prior church experience. You only need to be willing to show up.

Who Is This For?

Good Friday is especially meaningful for:

  • Those who want to enter Easter Sunday having walked the full journey
  • Anyone carrying grief or loss β€” this service holds space for it
  • People who find the cross more honest than the empty tomb feels right now
  • Those exploring faith who want to encounter Christianity at its most unvarnished

All are welcome. No exceptions.
