Easter Vigil | Saturday, April 4, 8 pm

Saturday, April 4 | 8:00 pm Memorial Garden — St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church 471 W. Martintown Rd., North Augusta, SC (Held indoors if weather does not permit)

The Night That Changes Everything

The Easter Vigil is the oldest service in the Christian tradition — older than Christmas, older than most of what we think of as church. And it is unlike anything else St. Bartholomew's does all year.

We gather in the Memorial Garden as night falls. The church is dark. A fire is kindled. A single candle is lit from the new flame and carried into the darkness. Gradually, one candle at a time, the light spreads through the congregation until every person is holding a flame.

Then the great stories of salvation are read aloud — from creation to the exodus to the prophets — as we keep watch together in the darkness, waiting.

And then it happens. The silence breaks. The bells ring. The word that has been silenced since Ash Wednesday returns for the first time:

Alleluia!

What to Expect

🔥 The kindling of the new fire outdoors 🕯 Candlelight procession 📖 Ancient scripture readings by candlelight 🔔 The first Alleluia of Easter ✝️ Holy Eucharist ⏱ Approximately 60–75 minutes 🌿 Held in the Memorial Garden — please dress for being outside

A Note for First-Timers

If you have never attended an Easter Vigil, this is the year to come. Many people who attend for the first time describe it as the most powerful worship experience of their lives. It is not quiet or subdued — it is a full eruption of joy after weeks of restraint. The contrast between the darkness at the beginning and the light at the end is something you have to experience to understand.

Note: Due to the late hour, childcare is not available for the Easter Vigil.

Who Is This For?

The Easter Vigil is for anyone willing to wait in darkness for the light — which is to say, it is for everyone. It is especially meaningful for those who have walked through Holy Week and want to arrive at Easter having earned it.

All are welcome. No exceptions.
